Zithromax (azithromycin) is a prescription macrolide antibiotic that stops the growth of bacteria in the body therefore treating such conditions as pneumonia, infections of the ears, lungs, skin, and throat, bronchitis, and sexually transmitted diseases. Before you start taking this medication it’s very important to talk to your health care provider. You will need to discuss your individual risk factors and contraindications for taking this medication. For instance, pregnant and breastfeeding women are not supposed to be taking this medication because it is not known for sure whether Zithromax can pass to breast milk. Being allergic to azithromycin, clarithromycin, dirithromycin, or erythromycin will also prevent you from taking this drug and fully beenfitting from it. An allergic reaction is possible and this means that you will have to interrupt your treatment. You also need to discuss any other treatments with your health care rpovider. The following drugs are supposed to be mentioned as they have been reported to interferee with the effects of Zithromax: theophylline, digoxin, warfarin, cholesterol-lowering medicines, ergot medicines, triazolam, calcium channel blockers, carbamazepine, pimozide, phenytoin, nother antibiotics, and HIV medicines. Make sure you observe the dose prescribed and never exceed the amount recommended, as an overdose is possible. Your dose can depend on the medical conditions you have or used to have, which is why your doctor will need to be notified of the fact you have or used to have kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, liver disease, history of Long QT syndrome, or heart rhythm disorder. An overdose of Zithromax can cause a number of reactions, such as stomach discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Make sure you seek emergency help as soon as possible if you have taken too much of this medicine. As most medications, Zithromax can cause side effects. The following mild side effects are possible: upset stomach, mild skin rash, diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting. The mild side effects mentioned are not supposed to be reported to your health care provider unless they become bothersome or change in intensity. More serious side effects are quite rare but nevertheless possible and can include the following symptoms: yellowing of the skin or eyes, hives, itching, swelling, irregular heartbeat, severe skin rash, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, and difficulty breathing.
